FSX SMOKE_ON does not show the smoke? Smoke on an AI airplane. I know that Extra 300 has a smoke system. So I create the Extra 300 airplane and send SMOKE_ON.
Add a smoke effect to the aircraft.cfg file. This is very easily done. For reasons that are not clear to me, this apparently has to be done as a 'light' effect, so it will only show if you turn the lights on. In your Effects folder you will find a number of different 'smokes'. Try them all until you find one that you like.
If you are very brave you can even make a copy of one of them and then edit it, having of course read the Effects SDK documentation first Here is an example for the IRIS F-14 Tomcat. In this case it adds an afterburner effect, but the concept is the same. This is the sort of thing that goes into aircraft.cfg in the Lights section. If all of the lights are in use you will have to make a decision as to whether to sacrifice one or more, or simply do without smoke light.12= 9, -10.5, 4.80, -0.50, fxf14aaniburner light.13= 9, -10.5, -4.80, -0.50, fxf14aaniburner The '9' is the type of 'light', 'smoke' is going to be the same as 'afterburner'. The fx is obviously the name of the smoke effect.
Choose these from your Effects folder. The lightNN numbers apparently are not allowed to have gaps. The other three numbers are the X,Y,Z coordinates of where the effect is to start. For a twinjet, the X and Z will almost always be the same (right engine is at same height and same forward/back distance as the left engine); the Y value will be +/- the same number. For a single engine plane (you don't say what you have), the XYZ positioning is going to be a little different, but the concept is the same.
What numbers do you put in for those'? As a starting point, use the values for the engine positions in the GeneralEngineData section: Engine.0= -13.333, -2.500, -1.667 Engine.1= -13.333, 2.500, -1.667 Work from there. Your smoke effect is probably going to start a few feet behind the engine itself, so you want to start to move the X value 'back' a little straight away (the -13.333 changing to -10.5 in this example). Why don't you give this a go, and come back again if you need more help?

Steve from Mudgee. You could also try experimenting with a SMOKESYSTEM entry in the aircraft.cfg file, as found in, for example, the default Extra 300. I suspect that this is something you need to manually turn off and on with a switch/gauge, which is not exactly what you want. I have no interest in propellor planes whatsoever so don't know the specific vagaries of what they can and can't do. For all I know they have specific enginesmoke systems, which would obviously be a better way to go. But no one else has answered your query so I have given you a method that whilst it may not be the best in this case, is certainly going to work, even within its limitations and requirements for experimenting. Hello, AVSIM Library! Category: Flight Simulator 2004 - Miscellaneous Files Nick's Jet Smoke Final Version ZipDive! Download File Description: FS9 and FS2002 EFFECTS: Nick's Jet Smoke.FINAL EDITION. This update is the FINAL VERSION of my smoke effect project. It is the result of weeks in tweaking and testing. Coupled with the enormous amount of feedback provided by the community the effects have developed into this awesome upgrade which I personally endorse and use. This update contains and entire list (see Readme) of visual quality fixes which include resolving issues coupled with using the simulator dynamic weather feature while running the effects and frame rate issues from the first update.
It also includes a complete tutorial on how to tweak the visual effects and the original.xml gauge to your personal taste. The smoke file include in this download is the B777 scaled file that was missing. I would be interested to know what letters represent what colours in the default smoke system.Currently I have this under smokesystemsmoke.0=-10.00, -0.70, 0.0, fxsmokew smoke.1=-33, -20.00, 1.40, fxsmokersmoke.2=-33, 20.00, 1.40, fxsmokerw = whiter = redb = nullg = nullI don't know any other letters other than 'r' and 'w' for the smoke colour, anybody got any letters they know that work?I assume you are aware that the fxsmokew etc. Is referring to the actual name of an effect file in your effects folder. As an example, if fxsmoker (it most likely will have an.fx extension also) does not exist in your effects folder then it will not display. So if I were to somehow create an effect that displays green smoke into my effects folder and called it fxsmokeg, it would display green smoke? (As I have just recently found out that FSX default only includes red and white).somehow.?A. Use the effects tool from the SDK. That's what it's for.
Copy fxsmokew (white) as fxsmokeg (green) and edit that file's colors to the shade of green you want-OR-B. Effects files are just text. Open fxsmokew in notepad, save as fxsmokeg, then edit the colors to your satisfaction.Reference the desired new smoke color in the aircraft.cfg and you have it.
There have been one or more tutorials posted in years gone by on how to do this in detail. One might have been called 'Playing with Smoke' or some such.-OR-Easiest.C. Look for add-on files that already provide such alternate colors for the Extra or other aircraft.
Yes, those have been posted previously also. Once you install those additional colors, you can reference them with any aircraft.Loyd.
